Talk about leveling up our skill set and mindset to prepare for the next pivot coming at you in your energy career.
"Everyone makes several iterations before they get it really dialed-in."
Today Ryan Fairbanks, the creator of Landman Pivot share his story of Careers podcast.
► Tell us about you and your podcast
I'm Ryan Fairbanks and I've been an Independent Landman for 19 years. I help rookie land professionals get on their feet in the industry, whether they want to go in-house or independent, by developing the skills that will have them prepared for their next pivot, whether by choice or market timing and choices beyond your control. We talk about pivoting to new roles within the oil & gas industry and leveling up our skill set and mindset to prepare for the pivot path. There are 3 ways to engage directly: 1. Pivot Coaching 2. Land Skills (mastermind) Groups 3. Land Skills Network (on LinkedIn and Facebook).
We focus on 7 specific skills that lead to work flexibility and having the power to pivot, no matter what the market throws at you, so that you can go from amateur to professional as a Landman
Our listeners are land professionals and right-of-way agents interested in professional development, leadership, negotiating, networking and collaboration.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
Many mentors and coaches have helped me along my journey of skill and professional development and it made good sense to share them with other people to help them along their way too. Podcast interviews are a familiar way to introduce people and give the audience a sense of connecting with and hearing from subject matter experts who have career experience learning, using, and teaching the skills that we talk about with a heart of service to help other people too.
My goal is to reach people in the early stages of their career and prepare for a pivot so that we can walk with them and grow together as they prepare for whatever comes next.
The podcast started in November 2021.
The first episode was recorded in May 2021, so it took about 6 months from the first interview to get a few episodes edited and ready to launch.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
We tried to get consistent with 1-2 episodes per month during each season. Usually the actual editing didn't take very long, but it took me a while to get it to the editor and then I was also the bottleneck on reviewing the edited episodes before releasing them to the audience.
At first, the recording schedule was all over the place. Then I learned to schedule consistent times each month to record and that helped to deliver episodes to the editor on a more consistent basis.
We record episodes early in the morning and on Saturday so that they don't interfere with other work commitments.
The Landman Pivot podcast is self funded by my Landman business as a marketing effort to let people know about services that we provide and how engaging in community groups and coaching can help them along their professional landman journey.

► What do you gain from podcasting?
Podcasting allows me to interview and highlight other professionals whose ideas and services serve the Land community.
Collaboration and learning from others what was hard for them and how they overcame big mountains inspires me to keep taking steps along my journey and I hope that it provides hope and encouragement to others along their way as well.
I listen to the episodes again after several months and always gain something new when I do. The podcast journal is an excellent way to capture thoughts that come up and remember to apply what I'm learning.
There are no paid sponsors of the show so that I am free to do what I feel best serves the audience. It's about connection, and I don't get interrupted by promotions.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
I talk to interesting people and ask them questions about their journey, struggles and successes.
Each conversation usually has a few prompting questions that the guest can consider in advance. Then, we just have a conversation. That helps the audience get a feel of what it's like to have a conversation with me or a small group of growing professionals.
We do interviews via Zoom.
► How do you market your show?
Listeners find the show through direct search, referral and social media marketing on LinkedIn and in industry related LinkedIn groups and through Facebook and industry related Facebook groups, and by direct referral.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Everybody starts somewhere. Just start.
Everyone makes several iterations before they get it really dialed-in.
Batching recording and editing, then metering out the episodes a little at a time seems to be the best way for busy people to keep consistent production and release. We're getting that figured out.
Erik K. Johnson and his podcast, community, emails and coaching as The Podcast Talent Coach have been invaluable at helping me get started and figure out adjustments to make along the way (https://podcasttalentcoach.com/).
